It appeared like a glum Friday morning. I was lying in the couch of our living room, down with fever. Just then my mobile phone rang. "Please attend the interview today Madam. This opening is urgent and may close immediately", said the consultant on the other line when I updated him about my infirmity. Reluctantly, I agreed to make it by evening and fixed the appointment at 4pm. Those days, I had newly moved to Bangalore to join my hubby following marriage. As any new bride, I was awfully missing my home, parents, friends and the city where I grew up. I was trying to dwell into the new surroundings and was badly hunting for a job as I thought it would certainly help in building new acquaintances and will slay my boredom.

By afternoon, I was feeling slightly better. As I didn't know the interview venue, I departed from home sufficiently early and reached the spot well ahead of time- by 2.30pm itself. As I continued my wait in the interview hall, I started sensing feverish again possibly because the effect of medicines was gone. The grim-faced interviewers turned up promptly on time and without any delay started bombarding me with all sorts of technical queries. To cut it short, this was the worst interviews I had ever attended. I knew I was answering it all wrong; however I was striving to project a poised look all through the meeting. Eventually, the interview ended in a customary manner. I being convinced of not visiting this organization again, took an auto to get back home.

This time, instead of the main route, I was taken through all the narrow lanes, obviously which I never knew. All the way, fearing that the auto driver may take me 'for a ride', I was looking out and scanning sign-boards to hit upon some familiar place names. Just then, I noticed two elderly ladies waiving their hands strongly, to stop autos. Every single auto merely zoomed away; the drivers not even bothered to look at them. As we were nearing them, I gestured the driver to stop. "We want to go to St John’s Hospital" one of them replied. I confirmed this if this hospice is on the way to my home and if I can drop them. They both got in with a relieved smile.

During the journey, we exchanged casual talk, that’s when they updated me that they are proceeding to visit their friend who was recovering from an operation. They hoped to reach quickly to share few moments with their friend before the visiting hours got over. I too enlightened them of being new to the city, about my search for a job and that I had been to attend an interview. "Don't be anxious child, this city has opportunities for everyone, your wish will be fulfilled very soon", one of them said while stepping out of the auto at the hospital gate. They even tried offering me and the driver auto fare, which I blindly refused and didn't let the driver to accept as well assuring him that I'll pay up.

On reaching home, just as I was narrating my awful interview experience to my hubby Rishi, my mobile buzzed. "Hi this is Smrithi Chowdhary from ___. You have cleared this interview and we would like you to come over for the final interview and discussion on Monday" said the voice on the other side. I almost froze on hearing these fanciful words! Off course, the Monday's interview was far better and it fetched me the job which I am enduring till now. I was posted in another location closer to my home and in no way had to visit the office where the interview took place.

Lately, I moved to this office and every day I pass through the St John’s hospital while travelling back and forth between home and office. I don't know why, but every time I spot the huge gate and the extensive campus of St John’s hospital, this encouraging incident seeps into my thoughts. Even now, I firmly believe that it was solely the blessing of those aged ladies which gained me the job and not my talent. Hence, dear friends will you support me if I amend the well-known biblical proverb “God helps those who help others!”

Hope helps
