Honour killing is an act of revengeful killing of a female by her own family members for bringing dishonor to the family. There can be various reasons behind the killing such as, refusing to accept arranged marriage, eloping with someone against family’s wish, adultery, sexual assault, etc. In certain cases men may also be killed for the same reasons.
Cases of honour killing are quite common in the northern region of India. States such as Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh are notorious for honor killings.
Indian Government is concerned at the increasing number of honour killings in some states and is planning to make a law to provide deterrent punishment against this social evil.
