Perhaps one of the most important life lessons that anyone could learn is the importance of administering first aid. Knowing first aid is beneficial to individuals and communities all over, as people are able to confidently administer medical aid during an accident or emergency. This has been proven to save lives.
First aid skills are versatile and can be applied in almost every situation, whether it’s home, work, school, or a public space. People trained with basic first aid skills are always prepared to help in the event of a medical emergency.
There are quite a few benefits to having basic first aid training, most notably it benefits individuals and communities, but first aid extends beyond that. Namely the ability to save lives. First aid training has been proven to help reduce a person’s recovery time. It can also mean the difference between a long-term disability and a temporary one.
Students should be instructed as regards life-supporting skills which include choking, bleeding, fractures, shock, drowning, electrocution, spinal injuries, burns and scalds etc. They should be taught and made to practise how to put a person in the recovery position, how to perform CPR and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator).
From my experience, since I have been teaching for many years, most of the people do not know what first aid is. This year I have saved at least two Maltese footballers from dying and treated many injuries because at the weekends I am a qualified first aider with the Malta Football Association. There are two types of education. One should learn how to make a living and the other how to live.
Education is an important tool that contributes to several aspects of a person's life. Society usually says that the more educated one is, the better one will be. Learning first aid is a useful skill but one needs to have knowledge, proper training and experience to save a life.
