We celebrate Independence Day to celebrate the spirit of freedom and independence. It is also celebrated to commemorate the sacrifices of our freedom fighters. This day is a reminder that the freedom we enjoy today has been earned the hard way and that we must value it as well as make the most of it for our good and the good of our nation.

By way of Independence Day celebrations each year the younger generation is acquainted with the struggles of the people who lived in British colonised India. The celebration is a way of invoking patriotic feelings among the people of our country to encourage them to stay united and work for its betterment.

Independence Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in different parts of our country. Various big and small events are organized in schools, colleges, offices and residential societies to celebrate this day. Here are some of the activities done on

India became independent on 15 th Aug. 1947 after a, long struggle. Jawahar Lal Nehru who had spent the prime of his life in British jails while fighting against the mighty British Empire, became the first PM of Indians and hoisted the Indian flag tricolor on the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi at 12:00 pm as the zero hour for 15 th Aug. started on this date in 1947. He called the moment India’s tryst with destiny”.
Since then 15 th Aug. is celebrated every year as Independence Day. The main festival is held in Delhi. The Prime Minister of India hoists the tricolor early in the morning on the ramparts of the Red Fort before a mammoth gathering of Indian and foreign dignitaries. VIPs and common people. He makes a speech from behind a bullet proof glass cabin. He lists the major problems of the country and how the govt. wants to address and harness them.
Small functions are held in all towns and cities and even in some big villages. In state capitals the Chief Ministers and at other places Governors and other dignitaries such as Deputy Commissioners, senior police officer, Mayors of Municipal Corporation, etc. hoist the national flag. In schools and colleges the Presidents of Managing Committees or Principals of the institutions concerned do the ceremony regard.
India is a country where millions of people live together whether they belong to various religion, cultures or traditions and celebrate this special occasion with great joy. At this day, as being an Indian, we should feel proud and must take an oath to keep ourselves loyal and patriotic in order to save our motherland from any type of attack or humiliation by other countries.
