There is a growing concern about the misuse of the electronic media, especially TV and Internet by children of all ages. The parents of school-going children are in a dilemma – how much TV/Internet viewing is good for their children? This is not unique to us. A developed country like the USA has a similar problem. Sex and violence are the common themes in most of the music videos and certain TV channels. A few American homes have asked the cable operators to block channels like the Music Channel.

“Suitable for viewing by those above 15 years of age” may not be applicable in our country. As such the children are often denied seeing good programmes on the TV and Internet websites. The time has come for a judicious use of the electronic medium, which can improve the knowledge and skills of school children. Adopting a laissez-faire approach or an ostrich policy by the parents or teachers will not do any good. There has to be a proactive approach by the parents as well as the teachers in guiding the children in the best way TV and Internet could be used for information, entertainment and education.

It is established that keeping a TV in a child’s room interferes with his or her progress in school. A few misguided parents want to pamper their children by giving gadgets like the TV and computer which they themselves were denied access to while they grew up.
