   A metro is a short form of metropolitan rapid transit (transport) system. 

  A metro is a metro rail system for transporting public. It is usually on a separate railway line, not mixed with the railway lines between two towns. A metro rail system is a prestige for a city. It is a symbol of growth, modernization and technology.

  The main purpose and use of the metro transport system is the quick commutation for the working class in the city.  For visitors to a city it is very important. Metro enhances the impression on a visitor about the city.  For example, metro systems in London, Paris, Tokyo, New Delhi and New York serve their public very well.

 

The various uses of a metro rail system are:

7. Metro trains are cleaner transport systems. They use electricity. So there is minimum pollution and ecosystem disturbance.

10. Metro system improves economy of the urban area.

11. Metros have an announcement before just before arriving at the destinations. So passengers are alerted.

16. Special coaches for ladies can be allocated. This ensures a convenient transport for old ladies. It is also a safe transport.

18.  As there are bridges, flyovers and underground tunnels though which a metro train passes though, there is no traffic signal problem. There is no worry of crossing of roads or railway lines. Thus many overlapping lines can be laid one above another in layers.

   Metros are misused by some miscreant people. They roam around the stations and commute without buying tickets. Some poor persons also commute regularly without buying tickets. This is a very bad practice. They also litter a lot. It results in a big loss to a huge investment by Government and private parties in the metro services.

 

   People have to be quick while using metros. As metros stop and start exactly at the times of arrival and departures. People have to look after their safety. They should not hang around the opening at the entrance of the coaches.

 

   Metros provide various options for daily and season tickets too. That is convenient for regular office goers. People are not allowed to smoke in the cabins. Further, some metros provide garbage collection boxes on the stations. So people can maintain their city clean.

   Smart cards and smart payment systems are available. So travel is made even more enjoyable. Passengers can read some book too as there are less vibrations during the travel. In some metros, a single ticket can be used for travel on a metro train or on a bus or a local train.
