Nobel prizes are given by the Nobel foundation of Sweden in memory of Alfred Nobel (inventor of dynamite and explosives).

You observe that there are more than two associated with Bengal and two with Tamil descent.

Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to receive a Nobel prize. He received in the field of literature for his excellent collection of poems Geetanjali in 1913. He was a poet, dramatist, musician, painter and also a novelist. He founded the Santhiniketan which is now Viswabharathi University. He was a creative genius, a good man, knowledgeable about science and culture. He was regarded as a guru. He composed more than two thousand songs along with music. The national anthem of India and Bangladesh were composed by him.

Sir CV Raman: He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work on scattering of electromagnetic waves. He worked as a professor of Physics at Calcutta University. He was also honoured with the title “Sir”. He finished his B.A. with honors in English and Physics at the age of 15.He worked in the Civil Services as Assistant Accountant General. Raman effect is used for identifying complex compounds, gases, liquids and solids. Hw was awarded the Bhaarat Ratna. He established Raman Research Institute in Bangalore. He was from a poor family in Tamilnadu.

HarGobind Khurana received Nobel Prize for his breakthroughs in Medicine in 1968. He interpreted the genetic code and explained the role of genetic code in the synthesis of proteins. He lived in USA as a person of Indian origin. He worked at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Mother Teresa received the Nobel Prize in 1979 for Peace. She lived in Kolkata. She served selflessly and devotionally the poor,  abandoned people, lepers and drug addicts. She was an Indian citizen. She founded the International order of “The missionaries of Charity”. She worked in the slums of Kolkata.

Professor Amartya Sen is an economist and philosopher. He received Nobel Prize for Economics. He worked famines, human development theory, welfare economics, under lying mechanism of poverty and political liberalism.  He worked at the Cambridge University and Harvard University. He authored a number of books which were translated in to plenty of languages. He was able to prove under some conditions the impossible theorem of Arrow will be possible.

Chandrashekhar won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983 for work on white dwarf stars. He had migrated to the USA. He was a professor in theoretical astrophysics. He published the mathematical theory behind the formation of Black holes. He was born and educated in India.


There were/are also some other Nobel laureates who were born in India or residing in India or of Indian descent. But they were/are not Indian Citizens.
