Are Today’s Youth More Self-Centered than Previous Generations? I chose this topic because it is one that is very obvious. Today’s younger generations are very narcissistic. They have grown much more self-centered than other generations and have changed their priorities. We are now living in the I-Generation. Where looking pretty and uploading selfies has become the norm. Where children are losing their youth in order to get attention and feel important. Psychologists Dr. Jean Twenge and Sigmund Freud explore and researches the younger generations. Being a narcissist’s means that you are self-centered, and it is the pursuit of gratification from vanity, or selfish admiration of one's own attributes, that derive from…show more content…
Psychologist Dr. Jean Twenge, author of Generation Me, also studied the younger generation. In her book, she describes the youth as “are tolerant, confident, open-minded, and ambitious but also disengaged, narcissistic, distrustful, and anxious”. This makes a lot of sense, and it is kind of refreshing to find evidence that supports your opinion. Dr. Twenge describes how the “gen me-ers” are redefining the meaning of being an individual in today’s society. She says they have distinct preferences about everything from compensation to work-life balance to having a personal impact. So their priorities are in the wrong places. Dr. Twenge did many experiments during her studies. She did an experiment on the Narcissistic personality inventory, in 2006. This test resulted in the scores during the 2000 were much higher in narcissism than the ones from the 1990’s and 1980’s. Professor Twenge also acknowledges that as part of normal developments, 18- and 19-years-olds are generally self-focused and narcissistic, but she says they are a lot more narcissistic now than they were in previous generations. They also found that men scored a little higher in narcissism than women, but women are catching up fast. These tests and studies open the door to so much more. Twenge then realizes the need of plastic surgeries have increased. It is all about looking the best and looking like a Barbie doll. People are taking vanity to the extreme by trying to make themselves look perfect.
