Attempts to harness the Suns energy have been made Ever since Archimedes is said to have used mirrors to set fire to Roman fleet attempting to conquer Syracuse.A modern specialist in the French Pyrenees (1970) uses 20,000 mirrors to generate temperature of many thousand degrees. As a source of intensive heat for both industrial and scientific experimental purposes, solar furnaces are ideal because the heat is uncontaminated , i.e.its free from carbon adulteration which occurs in normal highly - intensity furnaces.Solar cells producing electric current directly from the suns rays have been developed particularly for satellites and space research.
The focusing of the beam would be controlled from Earth by radio pulses, but exposure of the population to microwaves might have biological disadvantages________________________________________
