Sportsmanship, a key to healthy competition

Fielding Harris Yost, the famous American football player, coach and college athletics administrator defined sportsmanship defined sportsmanship as: ‘Sportsmanship is that quality of honor that desires always to be courteous, fair, and respectful, and it is interpreted in the conduct of players, spectators, coaches, and school authorities.’ From the definition we can infer sportsmanship is an agreeable quality that enriches the players’ personality as well as brings honor and respect to games and sports.

We learn this quality of sportsmanship while playing in courts, rinks, grounds, and rings. We learn good etiquette and polite behavior with our opponents. Games also teach us how to accept defeat and further work on self-improvement. Sportsmanship teaches us self-control, introspection, self-analysis, forbearance, patience, and an opportunity to overcome our own shortcomings and flaws.

Sportsmanship makes all the sports fixtures, matches, competitions, etc. more enjoyable, safe and entertaining. Sportsmanship makes all the players more sensitive to the needs, feelings, and rights of their opponents. Without this quality, the playgrounds might turn into a kind of conflict zones with the players playing against their opponents with hostility and aggression. This aggression might result in injuries to the players. Sports and games without sportsmanship may become quite risky and dangerous.

Nurturing this quality in players is not an easy task. However, everyone must learn this wonderful quality and be an inspiration for others.
