Article on the joy of helping

Today, I’d like to share a quick way to spark positive energy within yourself, especially if you’re feeling a bit down. It’s simple: help someone else.
Give something of yourself, no matter how big or small, to someone else. It doesn’t have to be financial aid, it can be a minute of your time or a few words of kindness.
Now it would be perfectly logical to think: if you aren’t feeling good yourself, how are you supposed to give to someone else? But I ask you to give it a try, my dear reader, and see what happens.
I think too often we fail to realize that one of the greatest and purest joys in life comes from helping someone else. No matter who we are, no matter what chapter we’re currently experiencing, I believe that the joy of making another person smile can bring warmth and light to our own hearts.
I recently realized why this might be the case — why sparking joy in another being brings us joy as well. You see, at the end of the day, we are all one. I know that might sound cheesy but hear me out.
All of us are part and parcel of the Universe. I am the Universe. You are the Universe.
I used to think that was such an arrogant thing to say but it’s not, really. To me, it just seems like a simple truth of life now. The same life that flows through every other living being on this planet flows through you and me.
So we are one and when you help another human being, you are in fact helping yourself. It’s the Universe caring for itself. And perhaps this is why it sparks so much joy in us.
All I know, dear reader, is that if you are having a low moment and you feel your light has dimmed, giving will help you heal.
I know it’s hard to get up in those moments but if you do get up and you give something of yourself to someone else, if you help brighten someone’s day — the light of that giving will transform your heart. See if it doesn’t lift you up out of that dark moment and into a happier state of mind.
I recently spent a few hours helping someone with a task and I walked away feeling as though I was the one who had received help because I felt so much more joyful. Has that ever happened to you? I’d love to know.
