The love for male child is more prevalent in India because people are still stuck in the age old belief that only Male will protect the family and will be able to carry the name of the family.
In early days, the girl child of a family was considered as expenditure and the boy as income. Dowry was more prevalent and the boy’s parent could demand from the female’s father. Moreover, marriages happened at a very early age. The girl child was not much exposed or educated. Boys were given education. This inequality has slowly started to vanish with the importance being given to girls’ education and protection of female fetus.
Yet, parents still give preference to male child thinking that he will support them in their old age and they feel that it is below their dignity to live with the girl child. Hope, this scenario too will change.
