Abstract:-The Indian Tourism Industry has flourished in the past few years, significantly contributing to the nation's Development, Gross Domestic Product, Foreign Exchange Earnings and Employment. India with her enriched beauty is unambiguously one of the most viable candidates for promoting tourism. Since the past few years, Government of India has undertaken various measures to promote tourism. Tourism is growth oriented industry with its impact on the employment and foreign exchange potential of the country. Thispaper analyses the changes in number of tourist arrivals from 1997 to 2012, increase in economic growth and the development of tourism. The number of tourist arrivals is directly proportional to the economic growth. India witnessed a grand total of 6.58 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals with annual growth rate of 4.3% in 2012. It is the second largest foreign exchange earner in India recording estimated earnings of 94487 Crore in 2011-2012. With world tourist arrivals expected to increase by 43 million every year on an average from 2010 to 2030. The domestic tourism is also a major factor which is contributing to the growth in tourism sector.

India is a popular tourist destination and has been. Successful in attracting the domestic and international tourists. The picturesque landscape, hill stations, historical sites, architecture and monuments, beaches and enchanting backwater, places of religious interests make India a preferred destination for the tourists from all over the world.
The Government of India launched 'Swadesh Darshan' and 'National Mission' on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PARSAD) in order to boost tourism. The Swadesh Darshan focused on theme based tourist circuits and integrated infrastructure development. There are twelve circuits which have been indentified under this scheme for the development.
These are Buddhist, coastal, desert, eco, Himalayan, Krishna, North-East India, Ramayana, rural, spiritual, tribal and wildlife circuit. Under the PRASAD programme, twelve cities have been indentified for the infrastructure development. These are Ajmer, Amravati, Amritsar, Dwarka, Gaya, Guwahati, Kanchipuram, Kedarnath, Mathura, Puri, Velankanni.
The Ministry of Tourism and other stakeholders of the industry are taking every initiative to tap the potential of rising domestic tourism, that traces its roots to increasing disposable incomes and a changing mindset of Indian travellers.
The 'Incredible India' campaign by the Government of India has been mstrumental in promoting India as a holistic tourist destination in the domestic and international markets. There are specialised international media campaigns under 'Incredible India'. Celebrities have been roped in to make 'Incredible India' a success.
Besides, the ministry has launched 'Clean India' campaign under which cleanliness has become an indispensible norm at all the tourist destinations. Regular studies are being undertaken to analyse the market, identify the key factors, income figures, holiday habits and psyche of people m order to identify the key drivers in the tourism industry.
All these efforts bore results and the impacts are evident across the sectors. The allied sectors such as aviation, transport, horticulture and handicraft have been benefitted. The hotel industry is another allied industry of tourism which has a vast potential to generate employment and help in earning foreign exchange.
The concept of heritage hotels has gained popularity as the tourists get the experience of the exotic life style of a bygone era. The heritage hotels are operational in the historical havelis, castles, and forts built during the ancient times. As expected, they have turned out to be major tourist attractants. The magnificent 'Palace on Wheel', a train which travels through Rajasthan, attracts a lot of foreign tourists. Nowadays many private companies like 'Make My Trip', 'Sterling Holidays', 'Club Mahindra' etc arrange domestic as well as foreign trips.
Tourism has played an important role in the revival of India's art and culture. The foreigners are fascinated by the rich culture and heritage of India. Seeing the keen interest of tourists in the rich culture and heritage of India, the government i taking steps to preserve it. The works of craftsmen and artisans are appreciated and consumed by the foreigner. This boosts their morale and adds to novelty and regional tourism helps to maintain the cultural identity of the minority groups.
Tourism is the largest service industry in our country and has the potential to stimulate economic growth of the country. The Government of India has taken a holistic approach for tourism development. To achieve its target the tourism infrastructure, viz the proper maintenance of the tourist destinations, railway stations and airports are very necessary.
