Their are a lot of things to be taken under consideration.
1. We have a good annual per capita income ( more than 5000 dollars) and we have got the highest population of millionaires. But the problem is with the division of wealth, because we also have the highest no. Of people below poverty line.
2. Political scenario: This present govt. is the first stable central govt. after three decades. Change of govts in India, changes priorities and that collectively affects the growth of our nation.
3. Generation gap: Believe it or not, it exists and is a major reason for keeping India on back foot. Young India is technology savvy, knowledgeable, ambitious and progressive. While the old India is still rooted in past struggling with bureaucracy, corruption , red tape and poverty.
4. Caste and religious barriers.
They too take a toll on our development. A spark that should be taken care of, is politicized. Accidents turn to incidents. Clashes turn to riots. Such incidents ruin our image internationally, then we fight over the outcomes, that leads to further destabilization.
5. No's. Count:
Infant mortality rate of about 55/1000. Which is just as bad as some 3rd world country like Gabon, Senegal or Yemen.
Literacy is at 59%, about the same as Haiti or Ethiopia.
Life expectancy is at 64 years, about the same as East Timor, Bangladesh or Yemen.
Some people would count population too. But I wont as it can be an asset if administered properly.
India is like a mini earth. We have our share of 'nice' and 'ugly' things. So you have seen the positive part but there also exists the negative side. Both live in harmony.
We as Indians need to care for the others around us. We have enough knowledge and infrastructure, but its not used to the maximum extent to make India a superpower.
.India is producing more english-speaking graduates than US, an absurdly high percentage of doctors and engineers in US are Indians, Indians take up more than 50% of all H1Bs on offer, and there are loads of more facts.
But for now, this progress is still limited to the private sector and the few Urban centres of progress.
The day when it starts spreading out to the other parts, that'll be the day when the world will truly recognise India as a developed nation.
A nation of a billion people, with a glorious history, a world class military and economy, superb scientific achievements can do much better than what it has done till now. But during all those a solid foundation has been laid which is now starting to bear fruits.
