Mountaineer Santosh Yadav has put India on the global map when she scaled Mount Everest twice; her first summit was in 1992, and she also was the youngest woman in the world to climb the Everest then. The following year, in 1993, she joined an Indo-Nepalese Women’s expedition to the world’s tallest peak, climbing it successfully to set the world record of becoming the first woman in the world to scale Mount Everest.
That’s not all, Yadav is the first woman to successfully climb Mount Everest from Kangshung Face! Also known as East Face, Kangshung Face is the eastern-facing side of the peak, one of the Chinese sides of Mount Everest. With most of the upper part of the face composed of hanging glaciers and the lower part consisting of steep rock buttresses and couloirs in-between, Kangshung Face is considered to be a dangerous route of ascent to the summit. It is also the most remote face of Mount Everest and the route to the top is longer as compared to the other standard routes, North Col and South Col.
While Yadav took all these challenges in her stride, she was also mindful of others. During her 1992 Everest mission, she helped another climber by sharing her oxygen with him. She has also led mountaineering expeditions to Kangshung Face. For her many contributions to the field of mountaineering in India, Yadav was awarded the National Adventure Award in 1994, now known as the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, India’s highest adventure sports honour. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2000.
In interviews, Yadav has shared how she had never wanted to be a mountaineer; the Aravallis that she could see from her hostel room in Jaipur always fascinated her, and when she joined the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi, all she had wanted was to just see the Himalayas. Hailing from Joniyawas village in Haryana’s Rewari district, Yadav was born into an affluent family that wanted to get her married at 14, which was the norm back then. However, destiny had other plans for her, and post her month-long training at the mountaineering institute, she knew where her heart was. Sharing her many learnings, Yadav has always maintained that being competitive breeds greed and envy, while simply focusing on goals can help one move mountains.
