carbon is the basic constituent of whole organic matter. it is the most important element making about 4% dry weight of organisms. carbon dioxide found in the atmosphere is the source of carbon in living beings and fossil deposits. there is about 0.032% of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. in addition to it, a sufficient large amount of CO2 is present in dissolved state in oceans. it is forty times more in oceans than atmosphere. from atmosphere, carbon is taken up by producers and consumers. green plants take it as CO2 and convert it into organic food. the consumers use this food directly or indirectly. a good amount of it is returned back to atmosphere through respiration of producers and consumers. decomposers breakdown dead organic matter and release CO2 to the atmosphere. burning of fossil fuels also releases CO2 in the atmosphere. weathering of rocks and volcanic activities also releases CO2 in atmosphere. some of the atmospheric CO2 gets dissolved in rain water and comes to soil in the form of carbonic acid. there is a continues and increasing discharge of CO2 into atmosphere by human activities of burning various fuels therefore, there is increase of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. this increase is responsible for global warming.
