Answer:

It was the last day of school for the academic year before five weeks of summer break. Parents were invited in the afternoon session to have a group discussion with teachers and students. The senior teacher began the conversation. She said, “Our students are with special needs. So, we don’t have big expectation from them.” Soon, the teachers started talking about each of their students and asked the parent for feedback about them at home. One of the teachers said about her student, “She is an excellent student in school and completes work allocated to her with extreme care and interest.” To this, the student’s mom said, “Nice to hear, but at home, she is unmanageable and doesn’t do any work.” I was looking at the student and could see her face shrink and tears roll down the cheeks. She became very emotional. Our students are with special needs. Nevertheless, they have feelings of hurt and joy too.

As the discussion progressed some of the students were asked to demonstrate what they learnt in their Yoga classes. One girl carefully walked to the area in front of the audience, barely balancing herself. Forgetting her disability, with pride and confidence, she performed Surya Namaskar. Following this few more boys and girls performed Surya Namaskar with ample enthusiasm.

It was my son’s turn, and the teacher said: “He is generally good but sometimes unmanageable”. She continued, “He neither participates in vocational activities nor in Yoga.” She inquired how he has been doing at home. I told her that of late he has been a good boy at home and enjoys his time after coming back from school. I concurred “since he has joined this school in the middle of the year he may need more time to adjust to the new environment.”

All the while my son was observing what was going on. Though he is mute, he listens well and understands the discussion. I could see some agitation in his face. Without anyone requesting him, he got up and walked to the demonstration area. He performed ten rounds of Topukaranam. It seemed as though he was challenging everyone that he can also perform Yoga. I suggested him to sit in Vajrasan. He immediately complied. Although he doesn’t listen to us when we tell him to do Yoga at home, I was taken aback at his new development.

I surmised that special students also need motivation and exposure to challenge their abilities. It’s all part of the learning process. Some may learn fast, while others may take their own time. Patience ultimately pays off for caregivers.
