Ecosystems are the dynamic interaction that occursbetween animals, plants, and microorganisms and the environment in a specific area which works together as single functional unit. When the balance of the ecosystems is altered they fail. Ecosystems are broadly classified into two types

Natural ecosystem: The ecosystem that exists in nature as such without any major interference or influence of mankind is known as natural ecosystem. E.g. terrestrial ecosystem like forest, desert, etc. and aquatic ecosystems like marine ecosystem, pond ecosystem, river, ocean, etc.

Artificial ecosystem: The ecosystem which are created and maintained by man is known as artificial ecosystem. They are also known as manmade ecosystem. Crop land, aquarium, etc. are artificial ecosystem example.

The major features of an artificialecosystem are its structure which need to defined by man are

1. Composition of the biological community (living organisms) including species, biomass, numbers, life history of the organisms, and their distribution in space (region), etc.

2. Amount and dispersal of the nonliving materials (abiotic component), such as water, nutrients, soil, sunlight, etc.
