Arul measured the diameter of a thick wire using a micrometer screw gauge of least count 0.001 cm.
He recorded the readings as: Observation 1 2 3 4 5 6
No. Observed 0.258 0.262 0.252 0.256 0.260 0.254 diameter D cm
Now answer the following questions. What is the true value of diameter of the given wire in cm? (a) 0.256 (b) 0.257 (c) 0.267 (d) 0.258
Which of the observation is most accurate? (a) 1 and 2 (b) 4 and 5 (c) 1 and 4 (d) 2 and 5

Answer:

True value = mean of the data = ( 0.258 + 0.262 + 0.252 + 0.256+ 0.260 + 0.254)  / 6 = 0.257

So, True value = 0.257 cm

Most accurate =   1 and 4

as per the theory we all know that  the true value is nothing but the  mean value of the recorded  readings

reading is given as

0.258, 0.262 ,0.252, 0.256, 0.260, 0.254

hence total 6 readings

true value = mean value

                 =0.258+ 0.262 +0.252+ 0.256+ 0.260+ 0.254  / 6

                 = 0.257 cm

hence option (b) is correct answer.

also most accurate is 1 and 4  ( ie) option (c)
