Aryan and Kevin are two friends. The mass of Aryan is 40 kg and the mass of Kevin is 50 kg. If they are 50 cm away from each other, then find the gravitational force (in N) acting between them. (G is the universal gravitational constant)

Solution:

  • Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation is used to explain the gravitational force. This law states that every massive particle in the universe attracts every other massive particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

  • The measured value of the constant is known with some certainty to four significant digits. In SI units, its value is approximately 6.674×10^−11 m^3⋅kg^−1⋅s^−2.

Given: m₁ = 40kg; m₂ = 50kg; r = 1/2m

Gravitational force = F = G\frac{m_{1} m_{2}  }{r^2}

F = G\frac{m_{1} m_{2}  }{r^2}

F = G\frac{50* 40  }{(1/2)^2} F = G\frac{2000 }{(1/4)}

⇒ F = G (8000)

⇒ F = 6.674 × 8 × 10^-8

⇒ F = 53.392 × 10^-8
