This festival is also known as 'Gundicha Yatra' and 'Ghosha Yatra'. As per the prevailing tradition, Gundicha was the Rani (queen) of Raja Indradyumna, the legendary builder of the first temple. She had initiated this grand festival. Hence, this festival is also known after her name.

Devotees Celebrate Jagannath Rath Yatra In Odisha

For the nine-day yearly Jagannath Rath Yatra that started today, a sea of devotees gathered at the beach town of Puri in Odisha. Lakhs of people converged in Puri for a glimpse of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra on the Bada Danda (Grand Road)  - as they travel from their home to Gundicha temple on three giant wooden chariots to be pulled by the gathered devotees from all across the globe who were present to show their presence on this auspicious day

The rituals started early in the morning. Adorned with giant floral crowns the deities awere brought out of the sanctum sanctorum amid beats of  drums, gongs, and cymbals in a procession known as Pahandia to their respective chariots that is parked in front of the temple.

Several devotees were seen celebrating the festival by playing trumpets drums,  and singing devotional songs. Traditional dances and performances are also held each year which make this procession a vibrant affair. The chariot festival ends nine days later with Bahuda Yatra or the return journey of the three deities to the main temple.

the President, Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Odisha Chief Minister and Union Minister wished people on the beginning of the Rath Yatra.
