As a precious metal, gold is worth more than silver; in the military, silver outranks gold. The current day Navy rank/rate badges are two different colors. For example, the rank of Ensign is a single gold bar, but the rank of a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) is a single silver bar. Yet, Petty Officer rate badges are silver, and the Chief Petty Officer rate badges are gold. Can you think of an explanation of why this seeming inversion might have occurred?
