As an engineer, why do we have to take modern Physics?

For example, mechanical and civil engineers use theory of stresses, structure, and materials to build stuff. Their success in applying the principles and theory of physics is indicated by how well the result works. So, we can conclude that yes, the engineer must understand physics at least at an application level.
