The Gurukul System was one of India 's renowned education systems in ancient times.
Explanation:
- It was a form of residential education, whose origins in the Indian subcontinent was around 5000 BC. During the Vedic period, students were taught a number of subjects and how to lead a "balanced and cultural life".
- Gurukuls primarily concentrated on educating students in a natural world in which the Shisyas lived among themselves with brotherhood, compassion , love and discipline.
- The important al teachings were in subjects such as mathematics, science, & language by way of group self-learning, discussions, and so on. Besides, the emphasise was also given on sports, arts, singing, crafts which developed their critical thinking &intelligence.
- Activities like mantra chanting, meditation, yoga, and so on generated peace & positivity of mind & made them fit. It was also obligatory to perform daily tasks on their own, so that practical skills could be imparted. These all added to the growth of personality as well as strengthened there the confidence, sense of order, intelligence & commitment required to face the world ahead.
- The above concept sadly has disappeared in the present form of education. Moral conscience, personality development & ethical training are totally lacking. One of the biggest defects in this education is that it's not an institutional concept which must give students holistic learning, but a business concept. It give students less time to engage in physical activity and to develop additional skills which can help a student to become a better person.
