As might be expected, in the beginning it was tough for all of us,
for mother and my father, for my three sisters, and my brother, and for
me too. The illness had left me weak. The servants avoided me as though
I were an evil eye personified. My father, who was a doctor in the public
health service, was grateful that I had got prompt and good medical
treatment, for delay would have affected my mind or endangered my life.
But he, like the rest, had no hope. My sisters treated me with care,
as though I were a fragile doll, and mother wept.

Answer:

1. The author's parents were devastated by their child's illness - the author's father was grateful for the prompt medical care and treatment given to his son, for if there had been any delay, it would have affected the author's mind and in turn endangered his life. But like the others, the author's father had also lost all hope that his son would recover. And the author's mother, constantly wept at the plight of her son.

2. The author's sisters treated him with utmost care, because his illness caused him to become like a fragile doll. His sisters were worried for him and so they treated him during his illness

3. The author's father felt grateful because his son received prompt medical care and treatment for his illness. Had there been any delay, it would have affected the author's mind and therefore endangered his life.

4. In the above mentioned extract, the author's says that due to his illness, the servants had avoided him as if he was "an evil eye personified". This is the expression which means similar to 'look at someone with suspicion' as the servants gave him suspicious looks as though there was something really bad about him.
