This statement is true.

As one moves away from the equator , the number of rainy days as well as amount of rainfall reduces.

Amount of rainfall or the number of rainy days decreases with the increase in distance from the equator because:

  • We know that transpiration is a phenomenon which occurs due to high temperature and it also helps in formation of clouds. Transpiration is responsible for causing rainfall.
  • When we move away from the equator, then the temperature reduces as the sun rays fall over a larger area and get dispersed due to curved surface of the earth.
  • The areas away from the equator receive less and dispersed sun rays have low temperatures compared to the areas which are near the equator.
  • Hence, the transpiration becomes low which leads to less rainfall.
