While the total forest cover of the country has increased by 3, 775 sq km, the tree cover has gone up by 1, 306 sq km. According to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2015 released here today, the total forest and tree cover is 79.42 million hectare, which is 24.16 percent of the total geographical area.

Some countries/regions are deserts while others have potential of having 100% forest cover on land area. For example naturally Western Sahara, Mauritania, Algeria, Libya and Egypt cannot have even one percent forest cover. How are countries like Kenya with only 20% forestry/agricultural potential expected to achieve 10% and still most of this areas are also used for farming, urbanization and infrastructural development
