As per the physical classification, Rocks can be classified as stratified rocks and unstratified rocks.  Stratified rocks are composed of several layers which can be split open along the stratification planes.   Example - Sandstone, Limestone, Slate etc.  Unstratified rocks are those rocks which ware composed of compact grains and cannot be split open.  Example - Granite, Marble etc.  Foliated rocks are those rocks which can be split in only one direction.  Example - metamorphic rocks.
