India is progressing towards population stabilisation with a significant decline in its decadal growth rate from 21.54% between 1991-2000 to 17.64% during 2001-11, health minister JP Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha.

Highlighting that while 24 states have already achieved a total fertility rate of around 2.1 level where the population stabilizes, Nadda said the government is further expanding the basket of contraceptives to promote family planning.

According to government data, India’s total fertility rate has also declined from 2.6 in 2008 to 2.3 in 2013 and India is now just 0.2 points away from reaching the replacement level.

While refusing to put a timeline for the population of the whole country to stabilize, Nadda said it may happen in two to three years.

“The government is now expanding the basket of choice for contraceptives to cater to the unmet need for contraception prevailing in the country,” Nadda said in Rajya Sabha when asked about the steps being taken to ensure balanced population growth in the country.

Nadda said that 184 districts have been identified where the indications have not been encouraging.
