The photosynthesis takes place only in the presence of sunlight. We know that sun is present only during the day time.

Plants do respiration all along the day but during day time the rate of photosynthesis is more than the rate of respiration. Due to this reason CO2 is absorbed by the plants for making food and eliminate O2. Thus releasing of O2 takes place during day time.

During night time as there is no sun, elimination of CO2 takes place and absorption of O2 takes place. this happens so because the rate of respiration is more than the rate of respiration.
