As said density of water is more than that of ice but it is always said that solids have more density than liquids, so why does ice has less density than that of water

Density is mass/volume
a solid has more mass per unit volume there fore its density is greater than that of liquids but in case of water
water while cooling contracts till 4 degree Celsius below 4 degree it expands this is called anomalous expansion of water/Due to this volume increase and density decreases .This is the reason why in very cold region fishes are able to survive under water since the ice floats on water since it has lesser density that water ^_^..Mark me brainliest
