The past continuous describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and is still going on at the time of speaking. In other words, it expresses an unfinished or incomplete action in the past.

It is used:

Often, to describe the background in a story written in the past tense, e.g. "The sun was shining and the birds were singing as the elephant came out of the jungle. The other animals were relaxingin the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly. Dear Mahesh,

I am fine and hope that you are also fine. I reached home safely. I wrote this letter to thank you for the love and care you bestowed on me while I stayed in your house..

The time spent with you in these summer holidays were the best and will be unforgettable, Especially that day when we went to the shopping complex and then had dinner in the nearby restaurant..we enjoyed a lot that day. And those games we used to play outside everyday gave me a immense happiness.

I spent a month on your home and it just seemed to be just a few days for me. Time flies fast, I actually want to spent even more time with you but holidays are no more.. convey my regards to uncle, aunty, mahesh and mahima.

Your affectionately

Sanjay
