As shown in the diagram given below, a leafy twig of balsam was taken and placed in a beaker
containing coloured water. It was left undisturbed for 3-5 hours. The coloured water was seen in the
stem, petals and leaf veins. Answer the following questions based on this observation :

The plant is placed in a dark place, e.g. a cupboard for 24 or 48 hours. It is essential that the plant is watered beforehand, and not forgotten about! This is so as to force the plant to use its reserve of starch, and not allow its replacement by photosynthesis.
