Given:

As shown in the figure a particle is released from highest position as shown. All the surfaces are smooth.

To find:

Distance of striking point from A ?

Calculation:

First of all, we need to apply CONSERVATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY:

∆PE = ∆KE

=> Mg(∆H) = ½ Mv²

=> g(10 - 5) = ½ × v²

=> v² = 100

=> v = √(100)

=> v = 10 m/s

From point B , the particle will follow a projectile motion (see attached diagram):

  • Time to reach ground is t :

 \therefore \: t =  \sqrt{ \dfrac{2h}{g} }

 \implies \: t =  \sqrt{ \dfrac{2 \times 5}{10} }

 \implies \: t =  1 \: sec

Now, distance from Point A (i.e. range)

 \therefore \: d = v \times t

 \implies \: d = 10 \times 1

 \implies \: d = 10  \: m

So, distance of striking from point A is 10 metres.
