Answer:

Transpiration is evaporative loss of water by the plant through stomata in its leaves.

Water is transported through xylem vessels. The transpiration driven Ascent of xylem sap depends mainly on following physical properties of water :

  • Cohesion- mutual attraction between water molecules
  • Adhesion- attraction of water molecules to polar surfaces(eg: tracheary elements)
  • Surface tension - water molecules are attracted to each other in the liquid more than to water in the gas phase.

These properties give water high tensile strength and capillarity .

As water evaporates through stomata, since the thin film of water over the cells is continuous. It results in pulling of water, molecule by molecule.

It means whenever due to low water vapour in atmosphere the water in plant evaporates due to concentration gradient of water between plant and the atmosphere. Then the water lost is replaced by the water molecules due to mutual attraction between them. And this causes a pulling force called transpiratory pull that helps in Ascent of xylem.
