As we move above the earth's surface, acceleration due to gravity, "g" goes on decreasing. ¶

This happens so because on or near the earth, g is inversely proportional to d² (square of the distance between the object and centre of the Earth). That is, if the distance between object and centre of Earth increases, acceleration due to gravity decreases and vice versa. ¶

This can be shown by -

According to universal law of gravitation,
f =  \frac{GMm}{ {d}^{2} }
And, by second law of motion,
f = mg
Hence,
 \frac{GMm}{ {d}^{2} }   = mg
g =  \frac{GM}{ {d}^{2} }
That gives that acceleration due to gravity is indirectly proportional to the square of distance between earth and object.

Hope it'll help.. :-D
