As you saw last week, the French Revolution was a period of time in France when the people overthrew the monarchy and took control of the government. It officially began with the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. (This is the date that is still today celebrated as the national holiday of France.) The revolution lasted 10 more years from 1789 to 1799. It came to an end in 1799 when a general named Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the revolutionary government and established himself as leader. This week, you will take a look at the rest of the revolution and try to determine how successful it was. In order to determine this you will need to take notes on what the aims of the revolution were and what the result of the revolution was. Then you can see how close the results came to meeting the goals. From doing the work on the causes last week, it should be clear that a main goal of the revolution was to take away the power of the King and 1st and 2nd Estates and give power to the people (3rd Estate). There were additional goals related to this overarching one: create a new constitution with more equal rights, improve fairness and ensure people weren’t going hungry, etc. 2.
