Let O be the centre of the circle with radius 3cm.

Let the external point be A.,

Let the point on the circle be B,

Therefore, the tangent is AB

Therefore, angle ABO = 90°

In Triangle ABO, using pythagoras theorem,

OB^2+AB^2=OA^2

AB^2=OA^2-OB^2

AB^2=5^2-3^2

AB^2=25-9

AB^2=16

Therefore, AB=4cm

Length of tangent =4cm
