It is a form of non-malignant pulmonary fibrosis. Asbestos fibres that float in the air are ‘inhaled’ into the lungs. Those fibres that do not get cleared away induce the immune response in the lung that causes it to get inflamed.
The fibrosis of the ‘lung’ exists even after asbestos fibres are removed. This causes the alveolar lining to thicken thereby decreasing lung capacity and shortness of breath. It can gradually become fatal.
