Answer:

The votes polled in election = 420

Step-by-step explanation:

Given data

Ashok scored 70% of the votes polled in an election

and he won the elections with majority of 168 votes

here we need to find total number of votes polled in the election

Let x be the total number of votes

then Ashok scores 70% of the votes

⇒ the number of votes of Ashok = 70% of x

                                                       = \frac{70}{100} (x)  = \frac{7x}{10}

⇒ the remaining votes of other person = x - \frac{7x}{10}  = \frac{10x-7x}{10}  = \frac{3x}{10}

⇒ the majority votes of Ashok is 168

⇒  \frac{7x}{10} - \frac{3x}{10}  = 168

⇒  4x = 1680

⇒  x = 420
