We know that evaporation is a surface phenomenon. When he was drinking coffee from a cup the surface area was less so the rate of evaporation was slower but when he sipped the coffee from a plate the surface area was more so the rate of evaporation was faster and we know that evaporation causes cooling. His wife help him by bringing a plate so he was not late for his office
