Introduction

The cell is known as the building blocks of our body.

If you see the construction of a house the house is made of bricks. The house is made by adding bricks one by one. Bricks make the structure of the house, they give the house a particular shape thus bricks is called the building block of a house. As many bricks unite together to make a house the body of a plant or animal is made of many small units, this small units is known as cell. Like bricks cells are the building blocks of all the plants and animals. Cells are too small to be seen without a microscope but some cells are big enough to be seen with our naked eye e.g. egg of a hen and an ostrich. Cells are of different shapes and sizes, there are different type of cells present in our body, on the basis of number of cells present in the body organisms are divided into two groups they are unicellular and multicellular organism. Some living organisms whose body is made up of a single cell so they are called unicellular animal e.g. protozoan, amoeba, euglena, bacteria. Some living organisms whose body is made up of many cells are called multicellular animals e.g. pea, fern, elephant, trees etc.

Hello children!
Today we will continue the lesson 'Cell' and discuss on types of cells - animal cell and plant cell and the cell organelles - cell membrane and cell wall. Please be attentive during the class and do the given assignments accordingly.

Cells are of two types:
a) Animal cells
b) Plant cells
Cells of animal and plant consist of different parts. They are as follows:
1. Cell membrane (plasma membrane): The outermost covering in animal cells is called the cell membrane. It is living, elastic and semi- permeable membrane. Its function is to control the exchange of substances between the cell and its surrounding.
Cell wall: It is the outermost covering of plant cell. It is thick and strong layer. It protects the cell and gives a definite shape as well.
Plant cells have a definite shape due to cell walls.
Animal cells do not have cell wall.
