Urbanisation is the process by which large number of people becomes permanently concentrated in small areas forming cities. The definition of a city or an urban area changes from time to time and place to place.

The United Nations Organisation has recommended that member countries regard all places with more than 20,000 inhabitants living close together as urban; but, in fact nations compile their statistics on the basis of many different standards. United States, for instance, uses “urban place” to mean any locality where more than 2,500 people live.

Urbanization:

-Urbanization refers to the migration of the population from rural to urban areas in search of better employment opportunities and living conditions.
-it has been closely linked to other processes such as modernization, industrialization and sociological processes where we see a shift in the population to areas which are better developed, both in terms of infrastructure and mindset.
-it creates enormous social, economic and environmental changes as cities are created and then developed, gaining in landmass and encroaching upon agricultural or forested lands.
-it is a modern phenomenon which resulted in a transformation from rural culture to decidedly urban culture as people began to move away from their families and struck out on their own breaking the community set-up.
-the cities that come out of this process are concrete jungles with their own way of functioning
