It is better to die on feet than to live on knees
Emiliano Zapata, the leader of peasant revolution during the Mexican Revolution gave the world the following inspirational thought: “It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.” The thought motivates and encourages us to fight against any type of injustice being done to us. The words ‘die on your feet’ are very important. They need to be interpreted properly. ‘To die on your feet’ must not ever be confused with giving up our precious life by accepting defeat. What Emiliano Zapata means is fighting doggedly for our rights and not sitting idle and accepting the injustice of the privileged class.
The History of mankind is full of inspiring examples that with their struggles showed us how to live with self-esteem. The world we see today in its prosperous and agreeable state was never the same in the past. People on all continents had to fight against racial, religious, economic, social and political discriminations. Personages like Booker T Washington, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi taught us how to live on our feet during times when they were threatened and forced to live on their knees. They refused to accept the latter option.
During India’s struggle for independence many of our patriotic countrymen even sacrificed their precious lives for the sake of freedom, justice, national pride, and discrimination. They taught us this maxim with their deeds. Their actions spoke louder than words. Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Chandershekhar, and many others whose names could not be recorded owing to various reasons.
The relevance of the maxim is universal. Even in the contemporary times there are many issues which can be dealt with the power and wisdom of Emiliano Zapata’s words. Indian democracy is suffering from many problems such as corruption, indolence, nepotism, inefficient public sector, mismanagement of national resources etc. people of India should fight against these injustices taking inspiration from Zapata’s encouraging words. All types of injustices and corruption will vanish in the face of the indomitable national will of fearless and courageous people who are inspired to die on their feet than live on knees.
