Poverty is deprivation of basic necessities such as food, house, drinking water, shelter, It is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. It is mostly prevalent in developing countries. It is one of the major problems of India. A major section of society is unable to fulfill even its basic necessities of life. This problem is considered as the biggest challenge to development planning in India. The poverty in India is measured by a poverty line that is probably one of the most disputed and incessantly attacked measures in the world. What’s more, the World Bank’s controversial poverty line has its origins in the Indian model! It is simply what some call a “starvation line”, a line that accounts for the feeling of satiety: measured in calories.  The spectacular growth of cities has made poverty in India incomparably more visible and palpable through its famous slums. If, proportionally speaking there are less urban poor nowadays, their sheer number has been increasing.
