The best argument is to talk to your friend indirectly. Tell them a small story e.g. talking in third person how one of your friends has been working very hard, studying in school and doing good in test, despite his parents being very poor and doing everything for the child.

You can continue by saying that even in such difficult circumstances, people have been stealing from this hardworking friend and how it is wrong to do this and karma means, if you do something wrong, it will eventually come back to you.

Talking to the friend directly might backfire, this is the best way

If i saw such things from my friend that he is stealing food from partner, i will defiantly feel bad for him .So to reduce or curb his bad instincts or habits. I will try an innovative idea. i will offer him very  delicious food on next day without knowing that i already know  about this incident . At the time of having lunch when he will praised or said something about food. I will politely say that we should not steal anything in our life. It makes us lazy & parson of less reputation.  I will tell him that if he will never ever steal anything in life I will be remain his best friend & will offer you good food & great advises whenever needed. I hope at some point of conversation he may realize his act.  Promise him not to do so again. I will tell without knowing him anything that food is basic thing, we should offer everyone or help instead of hiding or stealing it. He may get my point at this level.
