The social-reformists creed of nationalists advocated gathering national strength through a persistent movement of self help, which was dubbed as "Atmashakti", during the Swadeshi movement.

It was especially emphasized in order to invigorate the masses and enable them to assert their national dignity, honour and confidence and also bring about social and economic regeneration of the villages.

Self-reliance was promoted through-

--the setting up of indigenous enterprises (such as the numerous textile mills which sprung up in this period)

-- Nationalist educational processes e.g., Bengal National College, National Council of Education was set up to organize a system of education on national lines and under national control.

--setting up "village uplift societies" to bridge the gulf between the rural and urban people by working on social reforms and campaigns against caste oppression, early marriage, dowry system, consumption of alcohol, etc.

But the major impact of 'Atmasakti' was felt in the cultural sphere with Abanindranath Tagore's Revivalist art movement and the revival of numerous folk songs and stories in this period.
