Ashoka, once a bloodthirsty king, gave up war because he tealized that killing people is pointless. He decided to devote his time to the welfare of the citizens of his empire. He gave up Dig Vijaya and took up Dhamma Vijaya. He practised Buddhism. Hence he was a unique ruler.
