Positive-

1) Politics gives many disadvantaged community the space to demand their share of power

2) It helped people from Dalits and OBC caste to gain better access to decision making

3)Fixed occupation:- The caste system has promoted contentment and the stability of Indian society. The birth of a man fixes his career for him and thus he has not to worry about the choice of an occupation.

4)Preservation of hereditary skill:- It preserves the advantages of hereditary skill. The son in early life picks up the trade of his farther and becomes skilled.

5)Trade guilds:- The caste organizations served as Trade Guilds. They regulated production and prices and settled trade disputes.

6)Universal Adult Franchise and the principle of one-person one-vote compelled political leaders to gain political support.

7)No parliamentary constituency in the country has clear majority of one single cast.  

8)Every party need to win the confidence of more than one caste and community to win an Election.


9)Many political parties may put up candidates from the same caste.

10)The ruling party and the sitting MP or MLA frequently lose elections in our country.


Negative -

1)It disrupts social harmony

2)It can divert attention from other pressing issues like poverty, corruption ,etc.

3)Caste system prevents the choice of occupations according to one’s personal taste and ability.

4)Since change of occupations is debarred by the caste system, mobility of labor is not possible.

5)Caste system hinders the growth of large-scale enterprises. In large-scale enterprises intellect, capital and labor require to be brought together; but since the caste system allocates these two different castes, any large-scale enterprise is out of the question.

6)Caste-based politics diverts attention from main issues such as poverty, corruption etc.

7)Caste based politics leads to tensions, conflicts and violence.
