Group 1 elements react with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Group 1 elements react with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.For example lithium, sodium and potassium.

Their basic nature of alkali hydroxide increases from LiOH to CsOH down the group.

As the size of the metal ion increases, the internuclear distance between the metal cation and the oxygen of the hydroxide group increases.

Hence basicity increases.
